In Iranian architecture, the role of light is something more than illumination and has a greater concept and meaning. This structure also needed a source for providing light, on the other hand, this building is a water structure and urgently needed ventilation.
The three ovens or vents that you can see in this structure (above the house pond, above the first station of the staircase and at the end of the staircase) provided both the lighting of the structure and a flow of fresh air for the complex, these vents are high They are about 5-6 meters long and have a wide octagonal cross-section with a conical body.
Two of these wind deflectors lifted the air that passed over the water flow and brought it through the mesh brick windows to the ground floor space where the caravans stayed and rested; Unfortunately, today one of these wind deflectors (the end part of the staircase) is closed.
One of the most important features of the ovens placed in this unique collection is the efficiency of transferring cool air to the upper part of the Mehriz Gate complex, in such a way that a room is considered at the entrance and ground floor for people who were unable to go down the stairs. and these ovens were responsible for transferring cool air from the bottom to the upper rooms, and in this way, all the space in the upper rooms was cool and usable.
Undoubtedly, the placement of these ovens along with other components of such a huge and unique complex in the desert city of Yazd has shown the peak of art, capability and greatness of our predecessors in architecture and creation of structures based on sustainability.
It is a subject that maybe humanity has paid attention to in the last 40 years and realized that sustainability is considered one of the main components of human life, but the Darwaza Mehriz reservoir is one of the documents of the attention of the people of Yazd to this issue thousands of years ago.
